twotypesofvocabularytestswereadministeredinthisstudy.
(a)vocabularypre-test
inthevocabularypre-test,alistof40words(composedofthe20targetwordsforincidentalvocabularyacquisitionstudyand20distracters)wasgivenfortheparticipantstoself-reporttheirknowledgeofthevocabularyitems.tomakesurethattheparticipants'answerstothevocabularypre-testwerereliable,the20targetwordsweretestedinmixturewith20otherwords.theparticipantswereaskedtocircleanumberonafive-pointscaletoindicatehowwelltheyknewtheword(4=iknowthewordwellandcanuseitcorrectly;0=idonotknowthewordatall).table33showsapartofthevocabularypre-test(seeappendixdforthecompletevocabularypre-test),andtable34showsthedistributionofwordsineachwordlevelaccordingtocobb's(2005)classification.

(b)vocabularyposttests
abatteryoftests(i.e.,aproductiontest,aformtest,andareceptiontest)weredesignedasvocabularyposttestsaftereachcycleofthelisteningtasks(seeappendixd).thesetestswereadministeredtotheparticipantsimmediatelyafterthelisteningtaskstochecktheparticipants'incidentalvocabularyacquisitiononthetargetwordsthroughlistening.toexaminetheretentionofvocabularyacquisition,thesamevocabularytestswereadministeredagaintotheparticipantsoneweeklaterasthedelayedvocabularyposttests.
